Volcanoes in Romania
In Romania we have a chain of 6 volcanic mountains Oasului-Gutaiului-Tibesului-Calimani-Gorghiu-Harghita; they have been formed in the Neogene period. We can see here that the volcanoes are in a very good condition and that is because they are the youngest. Most of them have sharp and steep edges and they are very dangerous.
Mountain Oasului [edit]
Calimani [edit]
Inside the Călimani caldera rise a few secondary cones. Here we can find large amounts of volcanic rock with a high degree of fragmentation. Also we can find very often minerals like gold, copper, led, silver and coal.
In the biggest volcanic mountain we can find a crater that has over 10 km in diameter. In the middle of the crater a small lake formed called The Saint Ana, the lake has a total surface of almost 20 Ha and a water depth of 6.4 m and is located at a height of almost 1000 m. The lake is famous for the fact that it has one of the most pure waters in our country. The data shows that this one Is the youngest volcano from the Carpathian Mountains with an estimated age of around 42.000 years.
