What to do DURING the earthquake DURATION

Protect yourself

If you are inside a building 1. Stay in the location you are and keep your temper.

2. Bend, cover yourself and stay under a sturdy piece of furniture (table, desk, office) and hold with your hands your feet. If there is no suitable piece of furniture, go in the middle of the room, bend and try reducing as much as you can your height and protect with your hands your head and your neck.

3. Stay away from large glass surfaces (windows, skylights or glass partitions) or furniture, and objects that can injure you.

If you are outdoors

1. Stay away from the facades of buildings , columns with power lines or other dangerous places (wherever possible) and protect yourself appropriately.

2. Stay away from the coast . After a powerful earthquake enormous sea waves can be generated (tsunamis).

3. Reduce the speed of your car. If you drive, park in the closest, safe place, away from building facades, airlifts, power cables etc. Be careful and do not obstruct traffic.

Indoors:

Crouch to avoid falling, hide under a table away from windows, electric cable or open fire. If possible - get as deep inside the building as possible. Find a heavy object to hold on to. By any means do not try to leave the building during the earthquake.

Outdoors:

Find a place where you can hide from falling trees, buildings and debris. Do not leave this place until the earthquake is over.

In a vehicle:

Drive to a safe place, away from buildings, bridges and tunnels. Stay in your vehicle until the danger is over. Afterwards avoid bridge, parking houses etc because they may be damaged.

Pets:

Pets' behaviour can drastically change, becoming in an instant agressive and unpredictable. Carefully keep an eye on pet's behaviour. If possible, put your dog on a chain or on a leash. Animals should not stay in the same room as people because of health concerns and possible lack of room.

When earthquake shaking begins, it is time for school students and staff to immediately apply what they have learned about what to do during an earthquake. Reacting promptly and safely reduces your chances of being injured.

Do not panic, keep calm.

Drop down; take cover under a desk or table and hold on.

Stay indoors until the shaking stops and you're sure it's safe to exit.

Stay away from bookcases or furniture that can fall on you.

Stay away from windows. In a high-rise building, expect the fire alarms and sprinklers to go off during a quake.

If you are in bed, hold on and stay there, protecting your head with a pillow.

If you are outdoors, find a clear spot away from buildings, trees, and power lines. Drop to the ground.

If you are in a car, slow down and drive to a clear place. Stay in the car until the shaking stops.

If you are indoors during an earthquake:

• DROP to the ground; take COVER by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and HOLD ON until the shaking stops. If there isn’t a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building

• Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures or furniture;

• Do not rush to the exits if you are on an upper storey of the building. Stairs can become congested;

• Stay where you are until the shaking stops. Do not run outside. Do not get in a doorway as this does not provide protection from falling or flying objects, and you may not be able to remain standing;

• Do not use the elevators;

• Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler systems or fire alarms may turn on;

If you are in bed when you feel the shaking

• Stay there and Cover your head and neck with a pillow. At night, hazards and debris are difficult to see and avoid; attempts to move in the dark result in more injuries than remaining in bed

If you are outside when you feel the shaking

• Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires. Get away from the sea. Be prepared for the dangers that come from the surrounding area by digging in the open terrain

• If you are in a moving vehicle, stop as quickly and safely as possible and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires. Proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped. Avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that the earthquake may have damaged;

If you are trapped under debris

• Do not light a match

• Do not move around or kick up dust;

• Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing;

• Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you. Use a whistle if one is available. Shout only as a last resort. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust;
