Volcanoes in Portugal
The volcanic activity in the portuguese mainland is extinct but we can still find some evidences of ancien volcanic activity. The basaltic complex in Mafra-Lisbon zone and the volcanic bombs that we can find in the area of Peniche are examples of this evidences.
In the Madeira archipelago, wich is located in the african tectonic plate and on a hot spot, the volcanic activity is also extinct but we can still find some evidences like in the portuguese mainland.
In the Azores archipelago we can find nine islands where there are 26 volcanos and 8 of them are underwater. The Azores is located between the African plate, the Eurasian plate and the North-American plate. The most recent eruption in Azores was in 2000 close to the cost of Terceira island, underwater.
